�Be brave, kiddo.� Lespen waved. Senhi, by now nine years old, limped down the corridor on uneven legs, holding her mother�s hand. She waved back, with an arm three inches shorter than its sister. Lespen and Rain watched them go. When they turned the corner, Lespen turned to Rain. �I, uh� I got you something.� He pulled a bottle-shaped package from the carrier bag, a gold ribbon tied around the end. Rain gave a weak smile, and took it. �Thanks.� He looked down at the bottle, turning it over in his hands. �It�s� Well, y�know. To say sorry.� Rain looked up. His right eye focussed on Lespen, his left swollen and useless. �It�s all right. I probably would have reacted the same way myself.� Lespen bit his lip. �I used to think you had a great job. Doing little miracles all day long.� Rain sighed. �I�m sorry.� �No, I�m sorry. I don�t know why I got mad. I just thought� I dunno, I just thought�� It�s okay, really.� Rain looked back down at the bottle. �I just thought�� Lespen�s voice cracked. �H-how could you give a little girl something like that, and� and then take it away again?� Rain caught Lespen�s eye. �I can�t. But I have to.� Lespen nodded. He extended a hand. �Are we cool?� Rain took it, and shook. �Yeah. We�re cool.�

�Are you sure you�ve got your arm extended all the way out, Senhi?� Senhi nodded. Rain frowned, and put his tape measure against her right arm. �Hmm.� �What?� Adrel sounded wary. �Is there a difference?� Rain closed his measure. �Yes, there is. About three millimetres. But it�s quite normal to have a few little differences between the left side of your body and your right, especially at this age.� Adrel hesitated, maintaining Rain�s eye contact. �Should I be worried?� Rain glanced back at the tape measure. Three millimetres. Practically negligible. �No.� He smiled. �Well, I doubt it.� Adrel bit her lower lip. �How much do you doubt it?� Rain hesitated. �We�ll see.�

�Obviously we�ll be measuring the new limbs once a month as a precaution, but everything seems to be going just fine, so far. I mean, she�s only eight, everything�s still developing, but I�m feeling very confident.� Lespen sighed. �I can�t believe it,� he breathed, smiling. Rain smiled. �Yeah, it�s a miracle. We�re seeing more and more of those, these days.� �So what happens if the new limbs don�t grow the way they should?� �Well, as I�ve said, it�s highly unlikely. And if it did happen, I�d have to play a lot of it by ear, but� I think I�d be tempted to replace them with prosthetics, until Senhi�s finished going through puberty. But as far as I�m concerned, the risk of Senhi outgrowing her new limbs is so slim it�s practically negligible.�
